I’m reading Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.  The premise, as you might expect, is that many of today’s epidemics — from obesity to attention-deficit disorder — can be traced, at least in part, to our rapidly diminishing time spent in nature.  I am not, I confess, an especially outdoorsy person.  Yet everything about this theory makes sense — and, after all, what harm can be done by spending more time in nature?

So we went on an adventure walk around Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park with some friends, seasoned nature lovers who inspire many of our efforts.  It was a gorgeous (gorgeous!), picturesque day and I was excited to play with my camera.  But although my shots are good, I don’t think they captured the beauty of the setting or of the day.  It showed me that I need to learn more about the technical aspects of photography — and practice a lot more.
