I’m excited to introduce my latest design:  the Starlett hat.  Best of all, I’m offering the pattern for FREE below or as a Ravelry download!

A three-bobble pyramid tops this striped hat featuring purl ridges & ruffled brim.  I named this hat Starlett, after my dear childhood friend, who was as unique as her name — full of charisma and adventure and warmth.  I miss her in many ways.

Materials:

3 colors of light worsted weight yarn.  In the example, I used Rowan Amy Butler Belle (blue – color B & green – color C) and Valley Yarns Northfield (white – color A).  You’ll need 50 yards or less of each; you’ll use color A the most.

16” and 24”circular needles, size US 6 (4 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge (I am a loose knitter so in the example, I used size 5) and any additional needles you prefer for small-diameter knitting (DPNs or a long Magic Loop needle).

Gauge:

5 stitches/inch in stockinette stitch.

Measurements:  Child-sized: 7.5” from bottom of ruffle to tip of top bobble when measured flat.  See guidelines below for sizing up or down.

 Abbreviations:

*                      repeat instructions following single * as directed

BO                  bind off

CO                  cast on

K                     knit

Kfb                  knit into the front and back of the stitch, increasing by one

K2tog              knit 2 together (K3tog = knit 3 together)

P                      purl

pm                   place marker

Rep                  repeat

Sl                     slip

St(s)                 stitch(es)

Instructions:

With color A (in the example, white) and 24” circular needle,  CO 241 stitches.  Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist.  Immediately after the join, BO 1 st to help secure the join.  PM.  You now have 240 sts.

Switch to color B (in the example, blue) and knit around.  Keep your tension loose on this round.

Change to 16” needle and K3tog around.  You now have 80 stitches.

Next round: knit sts through the back loops around.

Next round: knit around.

Begin pattern repeat:

Switch to color C (in the example, green) and knit one round.

Switch to color A and knit one round.

Continuing with color A, purl one round.

Switch to color B and knit one round.

Continue in pattern until piece measures 5” from just above ruffle.  PM every 8 sts.

Begin crown decreases:

Next round: *K to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, sl marker* around.

Next round: K all stitches.

Continue in this manner (decreasing 1 st before markers every other round by knitting 2 together) until 10 sts remain.  If possible, avoid doing decreases on the P row of pattern repeat, which may require occasionally doing 2 rows plain.

K2tog 5 times.  Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to fasten off.

Make large, medium and small bobbles:

Large bobble:  Using color B, CO 8 stitches.  Next row, *kfb, k1* across.  P across.  K across.  P across.  *K2tog, K1* across row.  Do not turn.  Pass the second-to-left-most stitch over left-most stitch until you have just 1 st.  Pull yarn through last st.  Use tail to sew side seam.  Squish down into saucer shape.

Medium bobble:  Using color C, CO 4 stitches.  Next row, kfb across.  P across.  K2tog across.  P across. K across.  Do not turn.  Pass the second-to-left-most stitch over left-most stitch until you have just 1 st.  Pull yarn through last st.  Use cast on and bind off tails to tie a square knot, which will form sts into bobble shape.

Small bobble:  Using color A, CO 2 stitches.  Next row, kfb across.  P across.  K across.  Do not turn.  Pass the second-to-left-most stitch over left-most st.  Pull yarn through remaining st.  Use cast on and bind off tails to tie a square knot, which will form sts into bobble shape.

Sew small bobble to medium bobble and then those bobbles to the large bobble.  Sew large bobble base to top of hat using a whipstich.  Weave in ends.  Block, if necessary.

Sizing Note:  For an infant-sized hat, CO 217 sts, ending up with 216 after the BO after the join and 72 stitches after the ruffle; work as main pattern for 4.5” before decreasing.  Cinch off when you have 8 or fewer sts after decreasing.  Sizing up is easy too: CO 265 sts, ending up with 264 after the BO after the join and 88 stitches after the ruffle; work as main pattern for 6” before decreasing.  Cinch off when you have 8 or fewer sts after decreasing.
