I’m pleased to introduce another FREE hat pattern: OMG.

The front of this hat – embellished with a back stitch and duplicate stitch – says it all.  The thought-bubble concept came to me when, in a designing mode, I pondered, “What naturally appears over someone’s head?”  Do not be afraid of duplicated-stitching!  A video tutorial I made on this easy technique is linked below.  Enjoy!

Materials:   2 colors of worsted weight yarn.  In the example, I used Knit Picks Swish (red) and Classic Elite Princess (grey).  You’ll need about 130 yards of main color (here, grey) and fewer than 30 yards of the embellishing color.

16” circular needles, sizes US 6 & 7 (4 & 4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge (I am a loose knitter so in the example, I used US sizes 5 & 6) and additional needles in the larger size for small-diameter knitting (DPNs, a second circular or a long Magic Loop needle).

Gauge:  5 stitches/inch in stockinette stitch using larger needle.

Measurements:  Child-sized: 7.25” from brim to tip when measured flat.  See guidelines below for sizing up or down.

Abbreviations:

*                      repeat instructions following single * as directed

BO                  bind off

CO                  cast on

K                     knit

K2tog              knit 2 together

P                      purl

pm                   place marker

Rep                  repeat

Sl                     slip

St(s)                 stitch(es)

Instructions:  With main color and smaller needle, CO 89 sts.  Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist.  Immediately after the join, BO 1 st to help secure the join.  PM.  You now have 88 sts.

K2, P2 around for just shy of 1”.  K in stockinette (knitting every round) until piece measures 1”.  Change to larger needles.  Continue knitting in stockinette stitch until work measures just shy of 6”.  PM every 8 stitches.

Begin crown decreases:

Next round: *K to 2 sts before marker, K2tog sl marker* around.  Next round: K all stitches.  Continue in this manner (decreasing 1 st before markers every other round by knitting 2 tog) until 6 sts remain.  Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to fasten off.

Sizing Note:  For an infant-sized hat, CO 73 sts, ending up with 72 after the BO after the join; work as main pattern until piece measures 4.5”; continue as in main pattern.  Cinch off when you have 8 or fewer sts after decreasing.  Sizing up is easy too: CO 97 sts, ending up with 96 after the BO after the join; work as main pattern until piece measures 6.5”; continue as in main pattern.   Cinch off when you have 8 or fewer sts after decreasing.

Embelishments

Create Thought Bubbles:  Using the contrasting color and a tapestry needle, backstitch thought bubbles onto front of hat using photos as a guide.  Make sure your large bubble is wide enough (about 20 sts across) to accommodate the duplicate-stitching of letters later.  Here are helpful guides to backstitching: video and text.

Duplicate Stitch OMG:  Using the contrasting color and a tapestry needle, duplicate stitch the letters OMG onto the front of hat centered in the large thought bubble, following this chart:

Here is a video I created on duplicate-stitching. Weave in ends.  Block, if necessary.
